Attention turned to the para-powerlifting competition this morning, in what was the second day of the Cybex British Weight Lifting & Para-Powerlifting Championships at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry.
ParalympicsGB team member and Rio medal hopeful Ali Jawad won his eleventh British title with a best lift of 180kg in the men’s 72kg, with Suffolk Spartans’ Nathaniel Wilding claiming silver with 158kg and St Mary’s Powerlifting’s Ollie Brown in bronze medal position with 155kg.
In the men’s 72kg+, Brett Leahy won gold with 157kg, with Help for Heroes’ athlete Ross Austen in silver with 143kg. Bronze went to Abdullah Khan with a lift of 132kg.
The women’s 62kg category welcomed two ParalympicsGB representatives in four-time Paralympian Natalie Blake and London 2012 bronze medallist Zoe Newson; in what will be one of their final competitions before heading to Rio this summer, Newson took first place with 96kg and a Sinclair points total of 107.7, closely followed by Blake with a best lift of 101kg and 97.9 points. Third place went to Katie Cooke.
There were two medals for St Mary’s Powerlifting in the women’s 62kg+, as Carine Tchie and Elizabeth Merrick took gold and bronze respectively; silver went to Alfie Wright.
This afternoon’s session switches back to the weightlifting competition, with the men’s 56kg, 62kg and 69kg categories, followed by the women’s 75kg, 75kg+ and 58kg categories.
